I am participating to a very interesting show in San Diego with the Feminist Group.
Here is the Story of ‘The Traveling Piece’, the piece I’ve made for the show, inspired by Linda’s Rubin piece. Both pieces are shown next to each other in ‘Inspire/Respond’.
All the artists participating to the ‘Inspire/Respond’ project chose a piece at Madeleine Sophie’s center in San Diego to work from. Living in the Bay area, I could not go get the piece. So Anna chose a print for me by Linda Rubin. She gave Linda’s piece to her sister Molly who was traveling back from San Diego to Palo Alto. A few days ago I met Molly at her office which was really nice. We looked together at Linda’s piece which I was seeing for the first time. A beautiful print of a blue bird. May be a migratory bird?
I took it back to my house where I kept it in sight. I decided to take the piece to where the birds are around here, a place I love: the bay. Milo, my 11 year old son just ruptured his Achilles tendon. We could not really walk much but he, his brother Harper and I, went to the bay in Mountain View and took some nice pictures there with Linda’s piece. The birds were peacefully walking, searching for food, floating around, flying above, chirping and singing. It was nice to see Linda’s blue bird there too!
After we came back home I thought that Linda’s piece was the ‘traveling piece’ and my piece would be the envelope of Linda’s piece on its way back to San Diego.
I love this project and I am glad to be part of it.
Thank you Linda for the inspiration.

About FIG:
The Feminist Image Group was formed in 2009. FIG is a coalition of visual artists who meet to discuss art, see exhibitions, and support one another’s careers. Artists work across many media, including drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, installation, digital media and performance.
As artists, FIG is concerned with how women continue to be portrayed in the art world. As teachers and feminists, they encourage students and colleagues to be alert to sexism in its many forms. FIG promotes an inclusive worldview that allows all voices. Previous exhibitions include “Women by Women” at the San Diego Art Department, 2010, and “What Women Want” at the Lyceum Theater Gallery, 2011, and “Feeder” at 4141 Garage, 2012.
