"I am a Mandingo from Gambia, West Africa. The Mandingo from Gambia represents the western branch of the Mandingo people, descendants of the 13th Century Empire of Mali who are spread widely over the western most part of black Africa today. The professional musicians among the Mandinka are known as the Jali, and their professional activities are collectively referred to as Jaliyaa. The Jali learn their skills through apprenticeship and practical experience.

They are much admired for their skills and much in demand for their knowledge of traditions. Alfusainey plays the Kora, a 21-string harp-flute, exclusive to the people of West Africa.
